The Murder of Sarah-Anne
Draft 2
It was a quiet night. Only a few houses in Bukit Timah still had their lights on. Suddenly, an ear-piercing scream broke the silence of the quiet neighbourhood. Then it was silent again. A shadow came out of Sarah-Anne’s house. A murder had been committed.
It was bright and sunny the next day. Detective Nicholas, a private detective who had handled many cases and solved them, was in his small house eating his breakfast. He was happily eating and reading the daily newspaper until his secretary called to inform him that he had a client. He immediately put down his paper, ran to his car and set off for his office.
In the office, he met a person named Lee Siok Kee. He invited Siok Kee to his office.
“How are you?” asked Detective Nicholas in a very professional way.
“I’m fine,” said Siok Kee, “but I have a big problem and that’s why I’m here, you see.”
“Okay, could you kindly explain what your problem is?”
With a sad face, Siok Kee said, “My daughter, Sarah- Anne was murdered yesterday in her house.”
“I see. Have you informed the police?” Detective Nicholas asked worriedly.
“Yes, I have. But I want you to solve this case as I’ve read in the newspapers that you are very successful in your career.”
Detective Nicholas said, “Alright, I’ll try.”
It was true that he had solved many cases before, but they were quite small cases such as robberies. He had never attempted to solve a murder case before.
After he got the address of the crime scene, he quickly jumped into his sporty BMW and went to the address given.
The address given was 5, Upper Bukit Timah View. When he reached there, a very nice, big bungalow stood in front of him. As he walked to the entrance of the bungalow, he noticed that the house had a small garden and a backyard.
“Nice house,” thought Detective Nicholas
“And it’s a pretty good place to commit a murder. A big space with houses far apart, a murderer could sneak out without being seen by Sarah-Anne’s neighbours.”
As he stepped into the house, he was welcomed by many sculptures and pieces of art.
He went into the kitchen, which where Sarah-Anne was supposedly killed. She had a wonderful kitchen. With a state-of-the-art dishwasher, a nice refrigerator, beautifully decorated spoons and forks that lay on the metal rack, complete with white tiles and a wooden wall that had flower carvings on it. It was a kitchen that many would like to have.
As the corpse was still there, Detective Nicholas noticed how she was killed. The murderer had obviously killed Sarah-Anne with a knife. A stab from the back had killed her. The murderer had stabbed very deeply. Detective Nicholas decided that he would wait until the corpse was removed before he gathered clues. He quickly went to check Sarah- Anne’s background by asking her neighbours and family members and found out many things about her. She was a quiet girl and she would return at
The next day, Detective Nicholas checked the street directory and went to Intergraph to see if there was anybody who disliked Sarah-Anne that could be a suspect. When he stepped in to the office, he was welcomed by sofas and coffee tables. He asked one of her colleagues about Sarah-Anne. The colleague was named Mary.
Mary said: “Oh, I think there is one person, Linda. They were both fighting for the position of software manager. They are both quite hardworking people.”
“Oh, thank you.” Detective Nicholas replied.
He went to ask her other colleagues. True enough, it was well known in the company that Linda hated Sarah-Anne. He decided to put Linda on the suspect list.
He asked all the possible suspects with a motive to meet in his office. He planed to interview them one by one. He first asked Linda as she was the most suspicious of the lot. She looked very professional and was quite pretty.
Detective Nicholas asked her, “When did you last see Sarah-Anne?”
“Oh, I saw her in Intergraph on the day of the murder.” “How did you get along with her?”
“Um… … not very good. To be honest, I hated her. She was fighting with me for the post of the software manager. She was very good in her work; she was always punctual in handing up her assignments and attending meetings regularly. But I was as hardworking as her. It was a tough competition. But her uncle is one of the important people in Intergraph. I knew that that would give her the upper hand. I was pretty jealous, but I’m not that cruel to kill her.”
Detective Nicholas found it a bit suspicious that she looked very confident when she made her little ‘speech’. He thought that it would be rehearsed.
After that, he invited Adam in. He saw that Adam was quite nervous. His legs looked like jelly and looked like they would collapse any moment. He asked Adam when he last saw Sarah-Anne.
He answered: “I saw her just before the murder was committed. However, I can prove that I did not commit the murder. Look, I have a taxi receipt. At the bottom, the time when I sat the taxi was the same time as when the murder was committed.”
“Can I keep this?” Detective Nicholas said as he pointed to the taxi receipt.
“Sure, why not?” Adam said shakily. “Well, how about your relationship?”
“I… … I well, liked Sarah-Anne, but that girl didn’t like me, you could say that she hated me, and she was dating another man named Richard, I have no idea why she chose Richard over me while I was so much better… …”
Next into his office was Richard, a man who was in his thirties. He was quite handsome, with bushy eyebrows and bright sparkling eyes.
Detective Nicholas asked him: “So, how was your relationship with Sarah- Anne?”
“Okay, we were hanging out regularly and I was aware that she was hanging out with another man named Adam or someone and I was pretty upset about it so I started buying gifts for her…… and found that she did was trying to break up with Adam. But that Adam kept on pestering her day and night.” Richard said.
Finally, he invited Siok Kee to his office.
“How was your relationship with her?” asked Detective Nicholas.
“It was alright. But Sarah-Anne did not like me too much as I am not her biological father. Her real father died many years ago in a car accident. I did not like her hanging out with Richard as that guy associated with gangsters and he smoked a lot. I did not want my daughter to be married with such a man. So when I went to her house every week, I would persuade her to break up with Richard. But I could tell that she did not like it.” Siok Kee said.
After that ‘interview’ with all the suspects, he went back to the crime scene to gather some clues. The police were there as well and they were searching the place for clues. Detective Nicholas introduced himself to the officer in charge there.
“Good afternoon, I’m Detective Nicholas and the family hired me to solve this case.”
The officer replied, “Oh I see, I’m Officer Daniel, nice to meet you.”
“So have your team found any clues? “ Detective Nicholas asked.
Officer Daniel replied, “Well, my team found a teacup that had Adam’s fingerprints on it and Richard’s fingerprints on the dining room table.”
“Okay, thank you.” Replied Detective Nicholas.
After that, he went to talk to Sarah-Anne’s neighbours. One of her neighbours said, “I heard Richard shouting at Sarah-Anne and the day before yesterday I heard Siok Kee shouting at Sarah-Anne.”
“Did you manage to hear any of the content?”
“No, I’m sorry.” Replied the neighbour.
“It’s okay, thank you.” said Detective Nicholas.
Detective Nicholas went back to the house to check for clues. This time, he checked the whole house. He found a pen and on the pen was written, ‘Richard’s computer company.’ He knew immediately that the pen must have belonged to Richard. He picked up the pen with his gloves. He passed it to the police to check for fingerprints.
After the checking, Officer Daniel said, “Detective Nicholas, we have made a very interesting discovery. Although the pen is Richard’s, the fingerprints that we found were not Richard’s but Adam’s.”
Suddenly, everything made sense to him. He knew who the murderer was. He called up all the suspects and Officer Daniel and asked them to meet in his office.
“So, I think you know that I have already known who the murderer is.” Said Detective Nicholas.
All of them fidgeted uncomfortably and there was a huge amount of tension in the air.
“I had many clues. But most of them were red herrings. The murderer had done many things to put me off track. But the most important clue was the teacup that had Adam’s fingerprints. There was another clue were a pen was found. The fingerprints found on it were not Richard’s but Adam’s. It was a very big red herring. Richard was another prime suspect. They were many clues that pointed to him such as the one were Sarah-Anne’s neighbour heard Richard shouting at her. Linda had no clues pointing to her, although she confessing that she hated Sarah-Anne was suspicious. But the murderer was Adam. The teacup with Adam’s fingerprints showed that he was there on the day of the murder if not Sarah-Anne would have washed it. Richard fingerprints were found on the dining table because Sarah-Anne did not clean the house everyday. Adam’s pen also showed that he was there on the day of the murder, if not Sarah-Anne would have returned him the pen. I found out that Adam must have gotten someone to take a taxi at the time of the murder, right Adam? The red-faced Adam said, “You idiot, how did you find out? Yes, I was the one. I went into her house and drank tea with her. During that period of time, I saw Richard’s pen and I wanted to frame him so I placed the pen in the living room but I forgot to wear gloves. I also forgot to wash the teacup. I was so careless.”
The police took him away and he was summoned to court after two weeks. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to death one week later.
In his house, Detective Nicholas smiled with relieve: “Finally, case closed.”
